Engaging Millennial Donors

As donor habits changed, the United Way developed an award-winning online desktop and mobile platform that meets millennials where they live.

Traditionally, the United Way of Allegheny County (UWAC) has gathered donations from annual workplace giving campaigns. But as workforce demographics changed, so did the response to classic campaigns. Leaders met the challenge with a responsive, transparent and flexible platform that serves donors and UWAC alike—and has been endorsed for UW organizations worldwide.

The Opportunity

When UWAC leaders saw that its campaigns didn’t inspire donations, they aimed to engage donors on their own turf.

  • People under 40 were not donating through their employers as in the past
  • UWAC wanted to avoid a decline in donations and volunteerism
  • Leaders asked Summa for a 21st century solution to build and sustain relationships with individual constituents.

The Approach

Summa used Salesforce Products to build a platform for online and mobile pledging, volunteering, tracking and donor engagement.

  • Developed responsive desktop and mobile app for online pledging with multiple payment options
  • Added app that allows people to register for volunteer events, UWAC to track participation
  • Extended platform to workplace campaigns and included portal to capture outcome data from all UW programs

The project won the 2015 Salesforce Innovation Award for Non-Profits; gains extend beyond initial goals, and the solution is endorsed for UW organizations worldwide.

  • With a 360° view of donors, UWAC reduced donor churn and development time by an estimated 50%
  • UWAC can track and report donor growth, retain relationships with flexible programs tailored to donor lifestyle
  • Series of integrated projects addresses UW business strategy and needs of philanthropic community.
