Processes instituted by SUMMA Technology, Inc. to keep the company more environmentally aware and reduce pollution
First, SUMMA effectively reduced the NOx and SOx emissions associated with the burning of fossil fuels during the transportation of metals sent for recycling by installing a compactor for aluminum turnings generated by machining processes. The compactor works by increasing the mass per unit volume of the aluminum turnings by an approximate factor of 10. For example, a cubic yard box filled with loose turnings weighs roughly 200 pounds. That same cubic yard box filled with compressed turnings that have an appearance resembling a “hockey puck” will weigh approximately 2,000 pounds.
Although exact calculations of NOx and SOx emissions from the transportation of this material from SUMMA to the metal recycler varies according to fuel mileage of transportation vehicles and the quality of fuel used to operate these vehicles, the efficiency of transfer has been increased with the addition of this compaction process.

Second, SUMMA has partnered with Safety-Kleen to reduce VOC and HAPs emissions associated with production by installing and operating a solvent recovery system that reclaims spent solvents generated by painting operations to be reused in process. This is accomplished utilizing the Safety-Kleen Minimizer® system and managing spent solvents between processes to ensure efficiency in the recovery process. To date, this process has reclaimed approximately 400 gallons of spent solvent with an associated decrease of over 2,000 pounds in VOC and related HAPs emissions.
