Space Shuttle

SUMMA Technology has extensive experience as a manufacturer of space flight hardware. One of our largest shuttle programs has been machining the aluminum-lithium panels that form the Shuttle Super Light Weight Tank. SUMMA also provides Separation Rings and Nose Cap Assemblies for the Space Shuttle Program. We are looking forward to the future of space flight and our opportunity to continue producing quality hardware and contrbute to the exploration into space.

 MC1 Engines / X-34 Propulsion

The X-34 Technology Testbed Flight Vehicle was designed to demonstrate key vehicle and operational technologies applicable to future low-cost reusable launch vehicles. For this program, SUMMA provided:

- FASTRAC Engines to the X-34
- Sustaining Engineering and Data Analysis
- Logistics Planning and Engineering Support at Test and Launch Sites
Engine components, such as igniters, brackets, lines and ducts, and electrical harnesses were provided. Shown is the gas generator, used to provide high pressure gas flow to the turbopump.
A lightweight engine envelope simulator was fabricated for vehicle engineers to perform fit and clearance checks on the airframe well in advance of receiving the flight engines.
Mechanical Ground Support Equipment has been fabricated to assist in the handling and assembly of heavy/awkward test and flight hardware. Shown is a turbopump handling dolly.
The Drive Electronics Assembly, an avionics component used on the static test stands, provides conversion of low level computer command signals to high level signals to operate engine and facility valves and Thrust Vector Control actuators.
Electrical Ground Support Equipment was designed and fabricated to allow SUMMA engineers to verify correct operation of electrical components, such as cable harnesses, valves, and instrumentation, before the engine assembly is accepted by the customer.
Engine components were fabricated or procured, then assembled and checked out in SUMMA’s clean room.
A parts history tracking and usage database was developed which has wide application for other reusable aerospace and commercial systems.
Test data prediction, analysis, and discrepancy resolution support is provided.
A small team was used at SUMMA to accomplish the many tasks required, thus keeping the cost of the hardware and support services low.
